Where to Stay
The south is the most popular part of the island, containing such resorts as Puerto Mogán, Puerto Rico, Maspalomas, Meloneras, San Agustín and the famous Playa del Inglés. But with such spectacular scenery and landscapes, make sure you don't miss the rugged north and west coasts, as well as the island's interior.
Puerto de Mogan: The marina at Puerto de Mogán is Gran Canaria's prettiest seaside spot and home to some the island's best restaurants. Mogán is upmarket and close to several of the island's best beaches and the rugged roads heading west.
Puerto Rico has it all for a perfect sunny holiday. With two beautiful beaches and another (Amadores) next door as well as a shopping centre packed with restaurants and bars, two marinas and quiet corners perfect for a romantic night out.
Maspalomas is the resort for sunbathing, relaxing and walking. The sand dunes of Maspalomas are an incredible sight, stretching out along the south coast and covering around 4 square kilometres. Maspalomas is the place for a peaceful beach holiday and the odd night out in Playa del Inglés.
Playa del Inglés is Gran Canaria's biggest and busiest resort and home to its top nightspots. While the partying goes on till late, most of the resort is quiet and peaceful and you can avoid the crowds on Playa del Inglés beach by walking east to El Cochino.
Meloneras is a stylish and sophisticated area and its line of seafront hotels are the newest and smartest on the island. The boulevard is just a few paces away with its upmarket bars and restaurants right on the sea front.
San Agustín is the resort for a peaceful holiday. It has a golden beach, long seafront promenade that goes all the way to Playa del Inglés and plenty of quality restaurants.
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is the vibrant and cosmopolitan capital, situated on the north eastern part of the island. There’s so much to do and see – museums, art collections, fantastic architecture, beautiful parks, top-class shopping, cafés and also the famous Las Canteras Beach, considered by many to be the world's best city beach.
Agaete is located in the north-west corner of the island. It has almost as much sunshine as the southern resorts but remains untouched by mass tourism. And with lots of seaside restaurants at Puerto de las Nieves, the Agaete Valley is a destination in its own right.

An Island Full of Beaches
Sunny all year round and 128 beaches to chose from. Beaches with crystal clear water and fine golden or dark volcanic sand. Switch off and take long walks along the immense cliffs or spectacular dunes.
Las Canteras: Playa de las Canteras is a huge stretch of golden sand, 3km long, located right in the heart of the capital city, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, in the north-east of the island. It’s protected by a natural reef called La Barra which allows visitors to enjoy a swim in tranquil waters while surfers ride the waves in the south tip.
Maspalomas: Maspalomas, on the south coast of Gran Canaria, consists of 17 km of fantastic coastline and is known for its enormous expanse of dunes next to the sea and also for its old Lighthouse which is 55m high.
Playa del Ingles: Bordered by the beaches of San Agustín in the east and Maspalomas in the west, the 2.7 kilometre long Playa del Inglés is one of the most popular beaches in Europe, offering all sorts of leisure and sports activities including jet-skiing, sailing, windsurfing, water-skiing and many more.
Puerto Rico: This resort has a small and beautiful golden beach and the wide selection of watersports activities, ranging from jetskiing, sailing, diving, big-game fishing and windsurfing. Other attractions include golf courses, a water park featuring entertainment for people of all ages and a handy shopping centre nearby.
Mogán: Puerto de Mogán is an upmarket holiday resort on Gran Canaria’s southern coast. It’s also a charming fishing village and a marina all rolled into one. The stretch of golden sand on this excellent and well-protected beach makes it a favourite with families. The clear water is calm and the sea around the breakwater is a great place for snorkelling.

Walking, Hiking & Cycling
Gran Canaria has a unique, volcanic landscape an eco-system with rare fauna and wildlife. Indeed, UNESCO has awarded the island with Biosphere Reserve status. The roads are great for cycling and the mountrains and valleys are popular with hikers an walkers.
Cycling in Gran Canaria is very popular and there are plenty of great cycling routes, from north to south, around the coast and in the mountains where there are many arduous climbs and steep descents to keep the real cycling enthusiasts happy.
The island of Gran Canaria is round in shape and rises up from the sea like a 'massif'. In the mountains at the centre of the island lies Roque Nublo or Cloud Rock. This rock, which is 80m tall, is one of the largest free-standing rocks in the world.
The clouds often descend on Roque Nublo but it's still well worth a visit as it can reappear every so often.
 |
At 1813m, Roque Nublo is one of the highest points on the island. The highest point is just to the east - Pico de las Nieves - which is 1956m high. You can walk up to Roque Nublo from Tejeda village or across the top from San Bartolome or Cruz de Tejeda. The routes are well signposted but make sure to bring plenty of water as there are very few shops on route.
Another of island`s main attractions is the immense, deep crater (Caldera de Tejeda) that dominates the centre of the island, providing a drainage network of rainwater which in turn runs down the ravines towards the coastal areas.
The altitude of the island and the complexity of its shape have made it possible for many different micro-climates to exist. Hikers and walkers will also be enthralled not just by the variety of landscapes but also the huge range of flora and fauna, much of this is unique to Gran Canaria. Indeed, one-third of the island is a World Biosphere Reserve.
 |
The most preserved areas are in the southwest of Gran Canaria where the very best pine forests in the Canaries may be found. The Canarian pine is an endemic tree as is the Canary Island lizard, which is very abundant and endemic to the island. Endemic birds include the great spotted woodpecker, robins and the blue chaffinch.

Party the Night Away
Gran Canaria is one of Europe's top sun destinations so it’s not surprising that there's plenty of nightlife on offer and it's late and loud! In Spain, people don’t go out until midnight, most bars stay open till 2am and nightclubs don’t close till 6am...
Playa del Inglés is the busiest resort on the Island and also has the liveliest nightlife, catering for Irish, British and other nationalities. The Kasbah centre is the focus for 18-30s with its many pubs, disco-bars and clubs, while the Aguila Roja Centre has a number of lively Irish Bars. The Hard Rock Café beside the Yumbo Centre, is another very popular spot and some of the best restaurants are located in the Yumbo Centre. Maspalomas is more upmarket and slightly more subdued than Playa del Ingles. Night-time entertainment is centred around its commercial centres. Here you can enjoy a meal followed by a cocktail in pleasant surroundings and it just a short taxi journey from Maspalomas to heaving Playa del Inglés.
The capital, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, offers plenty of nightlife with an authentic Gran Canarian feel, which is a mix of mainland Spain and Latin America. There are many bars and clubs around Calle José Franchy Roca in Santa Catalina which play mostly Salsa, but there are also options for most tastes. There are also popular bars in the areas around Calle Triana and Vegueta which offer a more sophisticated atmosphere.
Puerto Rico is not as busy as Playa del Inglés but has plenty of bars. Most are located in the Puerto Rico and Europa Centres. Centro Comercial is the hub of the action and where most nightspots are found.
Casinos: If all-night clubbing isn’t for you, then there are two casinos to keep you entertained at night - the Casino Las Palmas in Hotel Santa Catalina and the Gran Casino Costa Meloneras, situated next to the five star Costa Meloneras hotel.
